Western Canadian Championships !!

It's been a busy 2 weeks in powerlifting for Robert O.
--Just completing the B.C. Provincials May 25th where he added 2.5 kgs to his own world bench (3 lift) record. Of course this increase was not official due to the lack of IPF referees but it was nice for the hometown crowd to see the poundage that would be a World record!

Then 2 weeks later it's yet another 2 contest day for Robo and up pops 203 kgs in the bench only portion of the proceedings-- A nice 3 white light lift with the needed IPF refs this time (Andrey Botenko --Mike Armstrong--and Joe Stockinger )
Robert O. also won the 2nd slowest pee-er of the day in the drug test section barely beaten by Best Lifter Igor Shestakov who took quite a bit longer to make a sample than our bashful robotalk ..."Igor is such a superior lifter it's good to be ranked 2nd to him in something said our bearded wonder." There was some stellar lifting in this contest but the true highlight of the entire meet was the Special Olympics section there was so much joy in watching this event at the end of the day I forgot that I only got 1/2 hours sleep the night before I havent smiled so much in a long time!! thanks Jeff Butt for bringing your big crew and to all in the Special O's Congratulations of your fine lifting and Spirit !!
A big thanks to Jason Duclos for shirt duties and coaching.. and of course Colin Bonneau and Betty for sharing your castle with me on the weekend and Colin --Congrats on your great new Canadian record !! that is one powerful lift !!

EARLIER THIS YEAR...
A New IPF World Bench Press record for Robert O. Smith!!
Too MUCH Robert O. Everywhere and a Close call !!

"An easy 402 Opener On the way to the World record"
There's been way too much Robert O. Everywhere Lately since his Official (3 lift category) IPF World Bench Press record ...If you've been to these pages before you know Robert O. Held the WABDL World Bench and deadlift records and some other honors in WDFPF -AAU and WNPF ..but nothing says "OFFICIAL" like when you achieve it with 3 -IPF international judges and a full IOC Drug test.. The lift was performed in the Canadian Nationals 2003 in Winnipeg Manitoba ..the official credit goes to the Manitoba Powerlifting Association for setting up an event where everything could be in place-judges -calibrated weights and IOC FULL Drug test (Thanks to CPU President Jeff Butt) --the Lift was 190.5 KGS (420 lbs) for the Masters 3 (60 plus age group) My good friend and GREAT Powerlifter Bert Merriman encouraged me to go for the record when I almost chickened out--If it wasn't for Bert and my Heavy day training partners Nancy Carpenter and Bruce Everett I still would be "record less" thanks to everyone mentioned here..You ARE the reason I got the biggest honor of my power career !!

And I'm now Qualified for the IPF Masters Worlds in Regina in October-- also Qualified from B.C. Are Jackie Sandhu -Pat Ling -Richard Nowazek- Grant Armour-Tony Tomra-Bob Hindley and Brent Davis ..

CLOSE CALL !! --C.J Batten one of my alltime Idols in Powerlifting just a short time ago in the USAPL Masters Nationals tried to beat my record with a huge 210 kg (462lb) lift...but it was NO GO ! lucky for me that the stars wern't with C.J on that particular day... he turns 60 soon and will probably be the one to bump the record up when and if it does happen..

Way too much Robert O.

-As soon as a funny blurb I did on CBC TV in Winnipeg about the contest was aired -- The offers for interviews started flowing in--first a terrific article in the Vancouver Sun by John Mackie.. Then a beautifully staged appearance on Urban Rush on Cable 4 --I suggested benching lovely host Erin Cebula and they came up with a way to cap off the interview with me repping her out about 20 times (pretty Damn funny) --

Then Red Robinson did a mention in his TV Week Column --

And I was the subject of a BCIT student piece tentively for Delta Cable --Thanks Tasha !!

And did a demonstration lift on City TV's Breakfast Television --I benched an easy 425 ( "breaking" my record by 5 lbs) as a plug for the BC Powerlifting Championships

..Then I was interviewed on Angele' Yanor's segment "Women on Men" ( Reminds me of a scene in a Richard Gere Movie) on MOJO Radio...

So for one lift that Might've not happened without Bert's coaching (And Insisting I go for the record increase) at the Nationals and My partners at Fitness Quest Gym's help it's been a great ride and yep I got the certificate all the way from Finland -- note : Just like Bela Lugosi wanted to be buried in his Dracula Costume ..I think I'll take that certificate with me too..!!
